ARTIST: ABDEL HALIM HAFEZ; one of Egypt's most beloved singers and movie stars.(The three all-time best selling movies at AraMovies.com all star Abdul Halim Hafez.) Translated lyrics of about a dozen of his songs are given on Romany Saad's site (see "links" page, this site.) Of these translations, several are found in the myriad Halim Hafez albums offered by Maqam Music ("sources" page, this site). ARTIST: AHMED ADAWEYA, (see song title Ayeela Tayeha, CD title "Best of Ya Salaam", and CD title "Best of Ahmed Adaweya" this index) this great singer was a major influence on the shaa'bi music movement of the seventies and still performs and makes hit recordings today. He is mentioned by Egyptian singer Hakeem (in his bio, at www.globalvillageidiot.net/hakim ) as a major influence, and is also mentioned by San Francisco percussionist Reda Darwish in his article in the Gilded Serpent (see "links" page, this site).

BEST OF OUM KALTHOUM: this CD by Hossam Ramzy does contain translations, though it does not contain vocals. Because the songs of Oum Kalthoum are so well known in the Arab world, the translations are necessary the dancer's interpretation of the music. The melodies of Oum Kalthoum's songs were composed by Egypt's greatest composers, and Hossam Ramzy is one of the giants among Middle Eastern musicians. ARTIST: FAIRUZ, the Lebanese singer whose status is legendary. For some translations of some of the songs she has recorded, (admittedly just a drop in the bucket) click here. Also, the collection of songs on the Aswan Dancers website (see "links" page, this site) includes some Fairuz songs. Maqam.com (see "Mail Order Sources" page, this website) carries many Fairuz CDs. For a biography of the singer and of the famous composers the Rabbani Brothers (one of whom she married) click here. Many of the songs Fairuz recorded are included in the Arabic Songbook sold at Maqam music. The lyrics in that book are in Arabic, however but the sheet music melodies are universal.

Editor's note: The music of Farid El Atrache is from the same classical era as that Oum Kalthoum. It gives us a glimpse into the cultured music of the Egypt of half a century ago, and the musicianship, singing, and arrangements are a feast for the ear.

LAIEL EL ASHEKIN: CD, artist George Wassouf. Nice summaries of the sentiments expressed in all the cuts on this album are provided on the liner notes of the CD (EMI). Known as the "Sultan of Tarab" (tarab being the spell which a singer can put his or her audience under) George Wassouf is wonderful to listen to and would also be nice to dance to. The songs are all love songs, and are from six to eight minutes in length, excellent arrangements and musicians, and danceable also. NOTE: on this CD is the song Haad Yensa Alboo. A thorough translation of the first part of this song, by Ossama El-Gohary appears on this website.
Other songs on this album are the title song, Erdha Bilnasseb, El Kilmah el Taibah, Aah Habaieb, and Lea'eb el Hawa.
