History of Longerath and Smalik

A publication of the Alvare Institute

The Gardlians are the southernmost of the so-called three native Longerathian ethnicities, being the Escorpionicans, the Lilianis, and the Gardlians. The most significant Gardlian nation today is Dascunya, in which the Gardlian tribes are believed to originate. However, it is believed that the territory covered by the Gardlian peoples was once somewhat larger.
The Gardlians could roughly be divided into five different tribes. In the north were the Gardlies. It is from this tribe that the Gardlian ethnicity is given its name, although it should be noted that Gardlian is a Lendosan term and is not necessarily used universally. Other terms include Greater Uhlanians or simply Dascunyans. The Gardlies were the people to establish the original Dascunya.
To the west were the Leameans. While the bulk of Leamean-occupied territory was in the south, the areas of heaviest population and the cultural centers were around the narrow coastal strip, particularly on the southern side of the northern bay. The Leameans were the primary ethnic group in the Kingdom of Uestadenia.
In the south were the Odemoss. The Odemoss were skilled hunters, and fierce in war. They were closely related to the Klerencies, who inhabited a region of central Dascunya.
In the east were the Lumattans. The Lumattans were the largest tribe in terms of land area, but their territory was sparsely populated. The most concentrated populations on Lumattans were in the west, closer to the origin of the Gardlian people as a whole, but there were settlements all the way to modern Phenixia. By the time they reached the eastern coast, however, the population was so spread out that it was easily subsumed by the Liliani colonists that established Phenixia many years later.

To the north of the Gardlian peoples could be found the Liliani ethnicity. At this point, the Liliani tribes in modern Estontetso were beginning to form their first states, and the Liliani peoples in modern Neoliliana would do likewise shortly afterwards. To the south were the Tawhitoan peoples, who occupied everything south of the Gardlians until they were displaced by the arrival of the Lilianis, the Ingallish, and the Westrians. The great civilization of the south Longerath branch of the Tawhitoans, the T'Ran culture, was still in existance, but was in severe decline. It is speculated by some that it was raids by the Odemoss across into T'Ran territory that helped to end T'Rani cililization, but this has not been confirmed.

A reconstruction of a Gardlian village

Beginning in about 2500 BP, the Gardlies tribe began to expand to the south, entering the northern territories of the Leameans and the Lumattans. The Gardlies were militarily superior to the other tribes at the time, possibly due to their proximity to the more advanced people of ancient Estontetso who were beginning to form kingdoms. In a short space of time, the Gardlies had conquered the Klerencies and the principal regions of the Lumattans. While the Lumattans living across the mountains in modern Phenixia were not conquered, these people were not a significant power due to their low population. The Gardlies also attempted to conquer the Odemoss, but found the fierceness of the tribes and the hostility of the terrain to be too much. They therefore made an alliance with the Leamean tribes along the south of the northern bay (the northerly tribes having been conquered) and launched an attack on the Odemoss together. They succeeded, and the territory was split between the Gardlies and the Leameans.
With the territory now called Dascunya now divided between the Gardlies and the Leameans, political structures began to establish themselves. The confederations of tribes that fought the wars of expansion began to coalesce into single states, each lead by a high chieftain. The nation of the Gardlies came to be known as Dascagnia (the origin of the Liliani name for the region, which in turn gives us Dascunya), and the Leamean nation was called Uestadagnia (gradually transferred into Uestadenia).
These nations lasted until the Liliani invasions.
