Labor Activism

Lake Superior Socialist Action and YSA are partisans of the working class, and therefore are very active in the labor movement. We believe in working within the existing unions to try and win them to a class struggle program. We call for the labor movement to break from the Democratic Party and form a labor party, to organize the unorganized and to honor and deepen rank and file control of the unions.

We are proud to have locally played a role in a number of important labor struggles. Among them the organizing drive by HERE to organize Canal Park hotel workers, the efforts by the Teamsters to organize Coke workers, and AFSCME's efforts to organize group home workers in Ashland. We have also been very active in trying to get the local labor movement to join and support the local anti-war movement (which has resulted in the Duluth Central Labor Body endorsing several anti-war protests, along with AFSCME, the Plumbers and the Washburn Teachers union - and most recently in AFSCME formally joining U.S. Labor Against the War). Currently we are also very active in the labor struggle being waged by HERE at the Duluth Airport.

Part of our work in the labor movement is trying to encourage a return to a more militant, class struggle approach. As part of that work we maintain a labor email list called Labor Notebook. We use this newsletter for sending out announcements and commentary on issues and events of interest to the local, regional, national and international labor movement from a class struggle perspective.
